Meet The Experts: Liz Crowe + Dr Sarah Gleeson from Family HQ

Introducing Family HQ

We're excited today to welcome to the One Fine Baby family these two beautiful sisters who own Family HQ. They are both highly respected in their fields (Nursing and GP Obstetrics) with huge rave reviews from our customers telling us about their wonderful experiences with Liz and Sarah. So we are thrilled to welcome them as an experts on our platform and we cant wait to see what is to come of the Family HQ app later in 2020.

We recently spoke to Dr Sarah Gleeson about how Coronavirus is affecting the way doctors treat patients, and the rise of telehealth within our commmunity throughout this pandemic.

Today we asked the ladies to let us know more about Family HQ!

What is Family HQ?

Family HQ is the simple and safe way to manage your family’s health.

When your little one is sick, you just want to focus on what matters. Like giving them the correct dose of the medication they need, at the right time. Every time.

As a parent, you’re constantly balancing the demands of family with work, running a household and well… life. We’re all busy (and quiet often, sleep deprived!) which is why it’s tricky to keep track of medications when illness hits your family.

What are the specifics?

Family HQ is the app that tracks, records and manages information about your child’s medication and health management plans. If you want to give your family the best, Family HQ is an all-in-one solution to seamlessly manage medication doses and times.

No more guessing or estimating. No more scraps of paper on the kitchen bench with times and medicine amounts. No more middle of the night conversations, trying to remember who gave the last dose and when. Family HQ gives you peace of mind that you’re giving your little one exactly what they need, when they need it.

Family HQ was founded by Liz Crowe and Dr Sarah Gleeson, two sisters with a shared passion for family health.

As mums to 5 busy boys under the age of seven between them, Sarah and Liz understand just how tricky it can be to manage medications when family members are unwell. While Sarah is a GP Obstetrician and Rural Emergency Doctor and Liz a Registered Emergency Nurse, when their boys needed medications, they too found themselves struggling to keep track of who had what and when.

As healthcare professionals, both Sarah and Liz have seen first-hand just how many parents accidentally overdose their children when administering paracetamol and ibuprofen. Many parents simply can’t remember exactly when they gave the last dose. Or if the other parent or a carer had also given pain relief.

  • In NSW alone, the poisons information hotline received more than 1,300 calls in a 10month period related to paracetamol and ibuprofen overdose in children.
  • In Australia in 2015, Poisons Information Centres received OVER 13,000 calls about paracetamol.
  • Medication errors made up over 40% of the calls about babies under 1month of age
  • Unintentional overdose or exposure to any medicine was the reason for the call to Poisons for 45% of babies and 90% of toddlers. *

Together, Sarah and Liz knew there had to be a better way, so they created Family HQ.

Meet Liz….

Co-Founder & Director - Family HQ

Liz is a Registered Nurse, with a career spanning over 9 years in Emergency and Critical Care nursing.

Liz has a lifelong love of animals and the land, which stemmed from her childhood on the family farm near Moree, NSW. While she studied nursing at the University of Technology Sydney, Liz always knew she wanted to return to a regional area. After completing her Graduate year at Tamworth Hospital in 2011, she secured a full-time job in the Emergency Department where she has worked ever since.

It was not long after the birth of her first son Harry that Liz had a fleeting idea that there must be a better way to track medications for little ones. But it wasn’t until she had her second bub Ollie, that she realised how easy it was to forget who had been given what medication and when – especially when sleep deprivation was a factor!

Ollie was just one month old when Liz pitched the app idea to Sarah. As healthcare professionals they knew there was a need for a simple yet effective method for parents to track medications, and as parents, they knew that there must be something better that scribbled notes on the kitchen bench.

Meet Sarah…

Co-Founder & Director - Family HQ

Sarah is a GP Obstetrician, Rural Emergency Doctor and Academic Clinician.

Growing up on a farm near Moree in Northwest NSW, Sarah has always had a love of rural and regional communities. Sarah studied medicine at the University of Adelaide and before she’d even graduated, Sarah knew she wanted to pursue Rural Medicine.

Now, based in Goondiwindi QLD with her husband and three boys aged 3.5, 5 and 6.5, Sarah works at the Goondiwindi Medical Centre as a senior GP, at an outreach service for the Aboriginal community of Boggabilla and at the Goondiwindi Hospital in the Emergency and Obstetrics departments. She also teaches medical students at the University of Queensland Rural Clinical School.

After several busy years both personally and professionally, Sarah had firmly decided that 2019 was going to be her year of saying ‘no’ to new projects. But when her sister Liz approached her with the idea for Family HQ, Sarah knew it was a no-brainer! She said yes without hesitation and over the next 14 months worked with Liz to develop the ultimate health management app for busy families.

Their Shared vision.

Together, Sarah and Liz share a vision to create a platform that educates parents about the potential dangers of over-the-counter medications if used inappropriately, and general tips about caring for your family when they’re unwell. Through Family HQ, their wish is to help parents like you eliminate accidental overdose while better managing their family’s health and medications overall.
